A hybrid marine ambulance brings vital healthcare access to Kerala's remote island communities, powered by solar and electric energy.

Unifeeder, a DP World company, in collaboration with Kerala-based NGO PlanatEarth, has launched a hybrid Marine Ambulance and Dispensary to provide essential healthcare services to remote island communities in the Kadamakkudy Panchayath, located in the Vypin Constituency of Ernakulam District, Kerala.

This innovative medical boat is designed to deliver outpatient care, emergency services, and medications to over 17,000 residents across 14 isolated islands with little to no road access. Operating six days a week, the vessel will travel through inland waterways, bringing primary healthcare directly to the residents' doorsteps.

Unifeeder India’s Regional Director, C.M. Muraleedharan, emphasized the organization’s dedication to community welfare, expressing pride in this initiative that brings crucial healthcare closer to those in need. Kisna Yadav, Chief Legal Officer at Unifeeder, highlighted that the project reflects the company’s broader vision of fostering connectivity—not just through logistics, but through access to opportunities and essential services.

The eco-friendly hybrid boat runs on a 40HP electric and solar engine and includes a consultation room, laboratory, mobile pharmacy, and essential medical equipment such as a defibrillator, oxygen supply, and suction unit. A dedicated medical team consisting of a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and attendant will operate the service, following a fixed weekly schedule and a dedicated helpline for appointments.

This initiative aligns with India’s National Rural Health Mission, supporting efforts to make healthcare more accessible to underserved and vulnerable populations in rural areas.
