They extend their boundless compassion from alleviating suffering to rescuing lives in dire situations. The COVID-19 pandemic, a recent global crisis, powerfully reminded us of their selfless nature.
Although they do not fight in border conflicts, doctors are the unsung heroes of the country who work relentlessly to save lives and prolong life. They display unwavering dedication, risking their own lives, to safeguard human health. They surpass expectations with their contributions, always at the forefront in responding to pandemics like COVID-19, Disease X, Plague, Flu, AIDS, Ebola, and others, ensuring the protection of the general populace.
Every year on the 1st of July, India celebrates National Doctors' Day, upholding a tradition that has been ongoing for 32 years since 1991. This celebration honors the illustrious and acclaimed physician Bidhan Chandra Roy, a politician and liberation fighter who also promoted education.
History Behind National Doctors' Day
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy's Legacy
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (July 1, 1882 - July 1, 1962) renowned as a doctor, educator, freedom fighter, social worker, and politician held the position of Chief Minister of West Bengal for an impressive 14 years, from 1948 to 1962. On February 4, 1961, he received "THE BHARAT RATNA," the highest civilian honor in India. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to serving the people, treating numerous individuals, and inspiring millions. Notably, he also served as Mahatma Gandhi's personal physician.
B.C. Roy National Award
In 1976, people established the B.C. Roy National Award in honor of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. This distinguished honour recognizes outstanding professionals in the fields of medicine, science, government, philosophy, the arts, and literature.
