Rela Hospital introduces India’s first Intestinal Rehabilitation Centre, offering specialized medical, surgical, and nutritional care for children with intestinal failure and complex gastrointestinal conditions.

Rela Hospital has launched India’s first Centre for Intestinal Rehabilitation and Nutrition Support in Mumbai, offering specialized care for rare intestinal failures and complex gastrointestinal disorders. The facility provides medical, surgical, and nutritional therapies, with a focus on preterm babies who are unfit for intestinal transplants.
A multidisciplinary team of experts, led by Prof. Anil Vaidya and Dr. Naresh Shanmugam, will deliver integrated care aimed at intestinal repair, regeneration, and elongation. The centre treats conditions such as Short Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Hirschsprung Disease, Omphalocele, Necrotising Enterocolitis, and volvulus.
Children suffering from intestinal failure, where the intestines cannot absorb nutrients due to genetic disorders or surgical removal, will receive total parenteral nutrition (TPN)—an intravenous nutrition method. The hospital also provides home parenteral nutrition for stable children, ensuring long-term support. Specialized feeding techniques and therapies will help infants transition to oral nutrition, and bowel lengthening surgeries will be performed when feasible. If all options fail, an intestinal transplant may be necessary.
Prof. Mohamed Rela emphasized the centre’s goal to minimize the need for transplants by promoting natural intestinal growth through advanced medical, surgical, and nutritional therapies. Rela Hospital collaborates with Carevue Health to enhance these services, ensuring comprehensive, international-standard care for children across India and neighboring countries.
