At GMC Baramulla's Oncology department, a beacon of hope shines for cancer patients in their challenging journey.

Three years ago, GMC Baramulla's Oncology Department began providing cancer treatment support in a dedicated OPD, operating six days a week. This alternative to Srinagar offers vital support and a hopeful substitute for patients seeking therapy or palliative care.
The department has treated 173 cancer patients in north Kashmir's Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts, providing chemotherapy and palliative care over three years.
Prof Muhammad Maqbool, HOD Radio Oncology at GMC Baramulla, shared that patients receive comprehensive health benefits at the hospital, showcasing the department’s positive impact.
He said -
“The patients here are provided medicines besides all the health benefits under one roof. The patient flow is also progressing with each day. We have a trained staff here which takes care of palliative cases as well.”
Impressively, the hospital conducted 1016 follow-up sessions, offering thorough care. Dedicated staff administered 261 chemotherapy cycles and managed 19 palliative cases, showing their commitment.
Muhammad Akram, whose father was diagnosed in 2022, expressed gratitude for the hospital’s chemotherapy services, providing hope and relief for numerous patients and families.
Akram said -
“The facility has not only saved time but also alleviated the mental anguish that often accompanies cancer treatment.”
The department's presence has been a blessing for cancer patients, yet the absence of certain facilities like Radiotherapy remains concerning. Patients must still travel to Srinagar for this, indicating an area for potential enhancement. Moreover, the department’s infrastructure needs improvement to accommodate north Kashmir’s patient load.
The team consists of two trained nurses, a professor, and faculty members, showcasing their dedication to better healthcare. Collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, through a signed MoU, offers support, equipment, patient care assistance, and staff training. The department’s recent webinar with the Kashmiri Medical Association provided valuable learning and exposure, fostering hopes for future engagements.
Overall, it stands as a beacon of progress and hope, lightening the burden on patients and families, and advancing healthcare accessibility and outcomes in the region.

“The department will soon start Radio Oncology too as the matter has been taken up with the higher authorities. The department also needs a separate building which will be taken care of in the near future.”
